In Death Could Not Hold Him, Michelle Amo revisits the Resurrection through the perspective of its first witnesses: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome. Rendered in contemporary dress, the figures collapse biblical time into the present, bringing the scene into immediate human experience. A blazing red sky and radiant tomb shape the painting's emotional intensity. Light becomes both a formal and symbolic force, drawing attention to the moment of discovery at the empty tomb. By placing the women at the center of the composition, Amo emphasizes witness, encounter, and transformation.
